Today I’m going to tell you eight different ways to avoid the coil binding for your planner book, and instead offer something a little bit more high-end like a stitched or clear cover, so you don’t have to have coils.

Hi everyone. I’m Lisa from Pretty Fabulous, and I help online businesses create beautiful digital downloads using Adobe InDesign. If this sounds like you or something that you may be interested in, make sure to hit the subscribe button below. I post new videos every Monday and Thursday. Now today, I’m going to give you eight different solutions for when you don’t want to use the coil binding, and I walk a lot about coil binding. In fact, the majority of my course is all about coil binding. I just added a section today on non-coil binding, and we went through a different catalog and different options. I just want to show you some different alternatives that you have when you want to create something a little bit higher-end or maybe just offer a different product line within your shop.

The first one is the easiest, and that’s called a uniclamp. Now a uniclamp, if I can show this to you over here, is simply a big U, like the letter U. It’s like a big C. It holds all of the pages in there by tension. So you’ll see this a lot with photo books, in fact this is a photo book. The uniclamp’s usually aren’t that big, because the uniclamp has to be such that the widest part of the U is wider than where the pages cinch together, because that’s the whole point of a clamp. Kind of like when you have a bag of chips and you clip them together. So that is solution one.

The second solution is simply to get it stitched. Some of the smaller paper ones, you basically just have a big sheet of paper that is maybe 8 1/2 by 11 or 6 by 9. And then, you just fold it in half and then you stitch it right down the center, if I can find the center of this. It looks like it has been sewn together. I will try to show you that. You can see the stitching right through the center, all throughout. And it still is able to lay flat. These are relatively smaller. So they’re not too big.

The third method is to just staple it. This looks like it is a small booklet. But you can see it has two staples in it and it has been … The pages on the outside are much thicker than the inside, and that’s how they’re able to hold that fold, so they kind of look more like a book. If I show you really close, you can see that there are two staples. Basically, like I said, just like the stitching, it’s two pages and there are two … Or, it’s one big page, that’s been folded in the middle and has staples right in the center.

Now the fourth method is to create a magazine. And I did this, if you went through my other tutorial on how to create magazines, I talked about different vendors that you can use to get this done. This is my mistake one, where I did the pages on the wrong side, so make sure your right and left is correct. But this is more of a magazine and it has the glossier, higher-end pages inside. That is one option.

Another option is simply to go the same way that all authors do, and use CreateSpace or IngramSpark. Your book will end up looking like a paperback like this. Now only IngramSpark can create hardbacks for you. CreateSpace cannot. They do paperback. So that’s just something to keep in mind when you’re trying to decide between the two. It’s pretty high-quality. It looks just like a regular book. The only thing you should keep in mind though is, that it will look, I don’t want to say cheaper, but for whatever reason, when you get them from IngramSpark and CreateSpace, everyone can tell that they’re from IngramSpark and CreateSpace.

All right. The next one is simply to take the spiral and hide it. So inside here you can see it looks like a regular spiral sort of mini notebook, however, all they’ve done is they’ve glued onto the back end some heavy card stock. With that card stock they simply put a fold over at the top. So now it does have a nice bind and it can still lay flat at the same time. A bigger solution, or a better solution to that might be to use a little bit of a thicker paper. And you can also … It’s a great way to add a folder inside here as well. So something else to think about.

All right. The next option is to actually have a very hardback, instead of those were kind of a little flimsier. They were just thicker cardboard-ish paper. This is just an actual hardback. It’s the same thing. Inside you have a spiral, just looks like a spiral notebook all by itself. But what they’ve done is they’ve glued onto the front and the back, they’ve glued a hardback cover and it’s all joined together here at the center. So it’s a little bit more cohesive.

The last option is the most expensive option. And this is one where they actually … This one actually is really nice, because the title has been imprinted inside of here, so you can actually feel it. I forgot what that’s called. But, inside of here it’s been glued and stitched together. Let me try to show you that a little closer up. If you look really close, the stitching … Can you see that? I don’t think you’re going to be able to see it. But the stitching at the top is joined together by, it looks like, cloth. And then it’s glued inside too. So this isn’t coming out. And you can see all the pages have been stitched together too.

So this isn’t going to come out. It’s not like it’s glue and it’s going to tear each page out. It’s the same thing. This is been made with pages that go all the way across, and then they’ve been stitched throughout the center. Now, it doesn’t make sense to do that for the whole thing. So if you look really closely, you’re going to see there’s little sections of almost like booklets inside of here. And each of those booklets have been glued together. And then within there they’ve been stitched. You can see that.

Those are my eight different solutions for non-coil planners, or workbooks, or whatever you are selling or creating your journals. I hope that was helpful. If you’re looking for the vendor list, that is a premium service, that I only provide within the Premium Planner course. I’ve listed all the vendors that I use for all these different stitchings that you can find locally, if you’re in San Diego, or online if you’re doing international printing.

All right. I hope that was helpful. And I actually hope to see you in the class, if you’re interested in making your own planner or journal. We walk you through everything inside Planner 201-301-401, which I now call Premium Planner Design and Production. So if you are interested in that, I will leave a link below. If not, you should probably start with Planner 101, which will just show you the different overviews of the whole planner industry and which parts are the ones that you want to create versus the parts you want to outsource. All right. I hope that was helpful and I will see you guys next week. Bye.
